California State Scholarships/Grants/Awards

California District Mini-Grant

2024 Fall Flyer Mini-Grants

One (1) mini-grant will be awarded to each District within California annually.  The purpose of the mini-grant is to assist any California member in good standing whether actively engaged in education or retired to promote continuing professional growth, to assist with the cost of materials and/or services that enhance classroom instruction while benefiting other members and/or the community-at-large. The scope of this grant includes course work or professional development opportunities.  Click on this link for an  application. The application will download to your computer. Open the downloaded application.  DO NOT TYPE ON THE DOWNLOADED APPLICATION. Choose to Duplicate the document or copy it and paste it into a new Word Document, Google Doc, or the equivalent. Complete the application and attach it to an email.  Email the application to the State Scholarship Chairman (see above) by October 30.

Regional Professional Development Scholarship

Now is the time to apply for the $1,500 Regional Professional Development Scholarship for credit courses towards an advanced degree or National Board Certification.  This opportunity is only open to active educators and closes January 31, 2024.  Click below for more information

California State Scholarship Award (even years only – due Mar 1)

*This award was first given at the 1976 State Convention in San Francisco. Eleanor “Bendy” Bendell initiated the State Scholarship program as her signature project as California State President (1974-1976). Bendy always encouraged scholarship opportunities while she was the counselor at Fremont High School in Oakland, California and throughout her years as a member of Alpha Nu Chapter of California Alpha Delta Kappa. Following her death in 2013, CA Alpha Delta Kappa received a memorial gift of $10,000 from her estate for continued support of the State Scholarship program.

Follow these steps:

  1. Click on Sign In at the top right corner.  You will need to type in your username which is your last name with a capital letter followed by your membership number.  Your number is on the top left corner of the mailing label on the Kappan.
  2. Your password is ADK2016 unless you have changed it.  If that does not work, click on Forgot password? and follow the instructions.
  3. Go to Foundation and open the drop down menu.
  4. Go to Awards, Grants & Scholarships.
  5. Click on the purple box that contains the name of the award, grant, or scholarship.

Maxine B. Pettibone Scholarship
The Maxine B. Pettibone Scholarship is awarded to the direct descendants of active members of Alpha Delta Kappa. Maxine B. Pettibone was a Virginia sister who was instrumental in the establishment of Alpha Delta Kappa chapters in Australia. This scholarship was created for students working on their Master’s degree in education who have the aspiration of continuing as outstanding educators in the field of education. The scholarship recipient shall have already displayed success through completion and attainment of certification with undergraduate coursework for teaching in his/her chosen major area of study. Recipients may be invited to present during International convention or regional conference(s). The fall semester scholarship application must be postmarked or received electronically on or before March 1 and the spring semester scholarship must be postmarked or received electronically on or before September 1.

Regional Mini-Scholarships (for Alpha Delta Kappa members in good standing only)
Under the umbrella of the Regional Professional Development Scholarships, International annually gives each region $3,000 to distribute to members in good standing, whether actively engaged in teaching or not, who apply to attend non AΔK-sponsored conferences, conventions, seminars, workshops and non-credit classes. The maximum scholarship is $500.  Applicants must apply online at the Alpha Delta Kappa International website.  See the link to International above and follow the steps.
Applications for activities taking place between November 15 and May 15 must be submitted online by October 15.  Applications for activities taking place between May 15 and November 15 must be submitted online by April 15.

Excellence in Education Award
This $5,000 award recognizes members of Alpha Delta Kappa for their outstanding contributions to education. To be eligible, the nominee must be an active member in good standing, be actively engaged in the education profession and be under contract in teaching, administration or some specialized field of education. Nominated by a colleague or parent, nominees’ adjudication is based on professional dedication, knowledge, skills, professional achievement and success, school/community collaboration, contributions to the educational process and active involvement in Alpha Delta Kappa. The due date is November 1.

Alpha Delta Kappa Innovation Grant
The Alpha Delta Kappa Innovation Grant is designed to assist creative, innovative educators who are not members of Alpha Delta Kappa with the cost of materials and services that enhance classroom lessons. The scope of this grant does not include coursework or professional development opportunities. This grant was developed for teachers who display characteristics of excellent educators. The Innovation Grant will be awarded annually to a maximum of five recipients from each of the seven Alpha Delta Kappa regions. The grant awards up to $1,000 a region, $200 a grant. It is awarded to non-members with no more than ten years of teaching experience who are nominated by A∆K members. Applications must be completed online by November 15.

Alpha Delta Kappa Classroom Grant
The Alpha Delta Kappa Classroom Grant is designed to assist creative, innovative educators who are members of Alpha Delta Kappa with the cost of materials and services that enhance classroom lessons. The scope of this grant does not include coursework or professional development opportunities. This grant was developed for teachers who display characteristics of excellent educators. The AΔK Classroom Grant will be awarded annually to a maximum of five recipients from each of the seven Alpha Delta Kappa regions. Up to $2,000 is awarded to each region, $400 a grant. See the link to International above.  Follow the steps.  Applications must be postmarked by November 1.
